Often described as the region where the Alps meet the sea, Waitaha (Canterbury) is a diverse region where you can ski in the morning and head out for a swim in the afternoon.
A region of remarkable contrasts and diversity, here you can find everything from majestic Alps whose white tips glisten in the sun, the largest International Dark Sky Reserve with millions of stars to be gazed at, steam rising from natural hot pools at Hanmer Springs, a step back in time in Akaroa, hidden bays, turquoise lakes, the garden city of Christchurch, and the dominant Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Everything from stunning natural sights to incredible wildlife are on offer in Canterbury and the avid walker will not be disappointed with a region filled with plains, peaks and rugged coastlines.
Whether you want to walk the Banks Peninsula Hike, the Kaikoura Coastal Trail or any other walks in this region, you are sure to find something to appeal to your sight and your senses.
