West Coast (Te Tai Poutini) or “the Coast” if you are a local, has long been known to New Zealanders as our untamed natural wilderness and wild and rugged coastline.
A walk in this region will see you access glaciers, explore UNESCO Heritage areas, visit natural arches, view spectacular rock formations and see some of the most untamed wild coastlines, scenic mountains and native temperate rainforests, the only region in New Zealand where lowland forest remains.
Rivers, rainforests and a multitude of geological treasures dot this 600km long region, and scattered throughout are charming towns including artisan Hokitika, the largest, Greymouth, and the historic small town of Reefton.
Whether you are walking the Old Ghost Road or perhaps discovering the Paparoa Track, the West Coast wilderness is ready to be explored.
